The International friendship day was launched in 2011 by the United Nations General Assembly, and it seeks to recognize the importance of friendship between individuals, countries, and cultures. The day was inspired by the need to build peace efforts, promote diversity and to remove barriers between communities.

The original idea of the world friendship day started in the 1930's and was initially celebrated on the 2nd of August. The day was however cynically viewed in most parts of the world as a money minting business. It, therefore, did not gain much popularity in most parts of the world expect in the Asian countries. A proposal was put forth by the World Friendship Crusaders, an international organization that aims to promote a culture of peace through friendship, for July 30th, 1958 to be considered as the World Friendship day.

With the advent of social media, the day has gained much popularity as there has been an increase in celebrating World Friendship Day and International Day of Friendship. The day is usually celebrated on different days, but in the USA and India, it's often observed on the first Sunday of August.

The day can also be observed at an individual level through the promotion of friendships with siblings, family members, neighbors or old friends.
